The official name of Yushu is Yulshul Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest of Qinghai Province, China. The official source of Yellow River lies in this prefecture as well as it is the old Tibetan trade mart of Jyekundo. Most of this prefecture is located in the uppermost basins of Asia’s three great rivers as the Yellow River, The Yangtse (Drichu) and the Mekong(Zachu).


Yushu prefecture is rich in Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries and culture. There are more than 100 Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries in this prefecture. Most of the monasteries follow Kagyupa tradition, then Sakya and Nyingma in Tibetan Buddhism. There are only 23 monasteries belonged to Gelugpa sect from the lamaseries of Yushu. It was known that on the average of 5% of the community are in monastic life.
Most of the people of this prefecture are leading with nomadic and peasants life. After urbanisation, many are in the field of various business and some are working as officials. Yushu is amazed with it’s beautiful landscapes of wide grasslands and valleys. Yushu’s Horse Race Festival is one of the most famous festivals when people from different region come to show off their tradtion. That would be a huge gathering many cutural activities. Such festivals are usually hold in the month of July.
